[ Let's say it's dinnertime and Mabel's at the cafeteria. She's got a plate full of, idk, spaghetti? that she's aimlessly pushing around. She's also got a bigass bowl of pudding on her tray that she tries to eat a spoonful of to cheer herself up, but that doesn't work either. ]

[ So hey Malik just wanted to eat dinner (which is rice and vegetables because he's lame) and no one told him there'd be sad kids here?? That isn't allowed? THIS IS WEIRD???

[ she sniffles. it's a wretched, heartbreaking sound. ]

[ she scooches one seat over, emptying a seat for Malik next to her. Because that's clearly what he meant, right? ]

[ He sits, leaving plenty of distance-- look, he didn't want to see a depressed child while trying to eat. Somehow this is her fault for not knowing exactly what he meant. ]

If you are going to cry, you don't have to do it out here.

[ The library is easily the most exciting change of this week, and Malik has spent most of the day here. He's at one of the tables with a small stack of books, enjoying some peace and quiet away from everyone else. Does he need an entire table when he's just one person? Absolutely not, but it's his table now. ]

[ she sneaks right up on him--not really intentionally so much as her footsteps are quiet and she's short enough that her approaching presence is easily hidden by his little stack of books.

So she takes a look at the books, and then, pointing a finger and blowing a raspberry-- ]

[ He jumps, completely unaware he was about to be mercilessly teased by a small child. ]

[ hey malik it doesn't matter where you are or what you're doing, mabel is going to pop out from absolutely nowhere ]

[ Okay so the weekend was pretty intense, wasn't it? Like. Not that Malik cares. But it's pretty hard to miss Mabel's distress.

He awkwardly tries to avoid her on Monday because, ew, feelings. However, morbid curiosity draws him closer. ]

Are you doing tasks this week?

[ very smooth, good job. ]

[ she's much more collected today! She's not even radiating sadness. She's also...not radiating a whole lot of joy and cheer, either. ]

[ Well that makes things easier! Malik also is feeling nothing. ]

I am going to try... these last few weeks haven't been very good.

[ suddenly there's a sharp pang of sadness and grief so acute it almost feels like physical pain. Then Mabel shakes her head and slaps herself on the cheeks. ]

[ Mabel's been avoiding the field ever since The Reveals started happening. So when she spots Malik, being Not There, she runs at him to tackle him in a tearful hug ]

[ whoa, there's Malik!! Mabel approaches, looking like an absolute mess with her messy hair, sand in every crevice, and blood all down her face and sweater. She sticks a hand in said bloody sweater, digging around a bit, until she pulls out some gummy bears!

They have a little bit of blood on them. ]

Hi Malik!! Want some?

[ she offers up the gummy bears. ]

How was your field trip?

[ he looks at mabel. looks at the gummy bears. back to mabel. ]

No thanks, you look like you could use them more than me...

I don't think my field trip was nearly as exciting as yours.
